A quaint village surrounded by wooded peaks, a rock fortress hidden deep in the forest, a mysterious tunnel, a treasure, a story… these are just a few reasons to visit Sibiel.

Official documents mention the village of Sibiel for the first time in the 14th century while the elderly are saying that the village was set up long before that, in the days of the Dacians. Documents also say that the fortress of Salgo - “Splendida” from the Zidul Hill dates from the 14th century, while legends say that it is much older and that beneath its walls lies the treasure of the Dacian king Decebal. And because every legend has a grain of truth in it, as time passed by there were many treasure hunters who destroyed the stone walls of the fortress trying to get to the tunnel which leads to the treasure. However, all efforts were in vain…

The mountains of Sibiel hide the remains of a former medieval fortress. The route to the fortress is hard, but it is worth the effort. The Sibiel fortress is a challenge both for those fond of hikes and for those who love legends and, why not, for treasure hunters, as well.

Today, most of the locals work in rural tourism. Sibiel is the ideal destination for tourists wishing to catch a breath in the middle of the nature and for those wishing to get close to the local traditions and the rich culinary variety.

For afar the best-known tourist objective of the village is the Glass Icons Museum; thousands of tourists from all over the world have crossed its threshold. Other objectives looking forward to welcome tourists are The Holy Trinity Church and, of course the crafts workshops.

Did you know...?

At Sibiel, if asked by the tourists, locals can organise a “traditional wedding”. All participants make up the wedding suite. Together with the groom and the god-parents, they take the bride from home and the dowry she received from her parents. After the religious ceremony, the wedding party gets together at the Village Pavilion where the party goes on. The entire ceremony is organised according to the old traditions and guests are pampered with exquisite dishes.
