The Bazna Resort is situated to the north of the county, 18 km away from the town of Mediaş and 70 km away from Sibiu, hidden among low hills and large, swampy valleys bearing large deposits of methane gas and mineral springs.

The settlement was created in the early 14th century when the first Saxon colonist settled here and built a fortified church. 1672 is an important year in the history of Bazna. One late autumn day, a few shepherds wandering nearby made a fire near some ponds. They were astonished to see the ponds catching fire and large flames dancing on top of them, like ghost creatures; unknowingly, they had discovered the methane gas.

In the early 19th century, doctors and chemists came all the way from Vienna to study the effects of the Bazna salt and of the local climate. Soon the number of tourists coming to Bazna for spa treatments started to grow. In 1843 they set up the Bazna resort taken over in 1905 by the evangelical community which turned it into a spa resort renowned all over in Transylvania.

The mineral waters, the sapropelic mud, the Bazna salt together with the picturesque landscape and the pleasant climate are appealing to numerous tourists who come here on an annual basis for various treatments. Bazna is also a good destination for those who wish to relax in the middle of the nature or for lovers of active tourism, who can enjoy hikes or bicycle rides to the orchards-covered hills or the beech forests surrounding the village. Do not hesitate to visit the fortified evangelical church, as well.
