In the 13th century there was a Romanesque basilica in this location but as the community grew and the small citadel turned into a true burgh, its inhabitants decided to build a much bigger church with a tower that would “reach the skies”.

The works for the new cathedral started in 1380 but because the citadel was constantly threatened by attacks, the people abandoned the construction for a while and instead they fortified the defence ramparts. The church was finished in 1520 when they erected the steeple.

The church is an ample gothic monument dominant through its massiveness. The main altar, the secondary altars, the paintings, the emblems, the bronze font, the organ and the architectural details rightfully make it one of the most beautiful churches in Transylvania, built by the most skilled masters of the times.

Opposite of the main altar lies a special room named ferula in whose walls they fixed 67 tombstones of the great local personalities buried here until the 19th century.

Take your time when visiting the cathedral, in summer it is an ideal, cool, peaceful location where you may recollect while listening to an organ concert.

The church organ was made in 1671 in a baroque style and is one of the oldest in south-eastern Europe.

The church choir houses a beautiful font said to have been cast in 1438 from the bronze of the Turkish canons captured at Sibiu during a battle.

The only Romanian buried in the Evangelical Cathedral is Prince Mihnea the Bad, son of Vlad the Impeller.
