On the location of today’s church there was first a Romanesque basilica whose traces were discovered precisely under the vestry floor. The basilica had probably been erected in the 13th century when the settlement was created.

The present-day church was built in the 15th century in the gothic style. Later on, to resist the continuous invasions, the church was surrounded with defence walls and towers. Today 4 towers still stand together with the 6-7 m high walls with battlements. Inside the church there are numerous very valuable items such as the 1528 pews, the 1779 altar, the 1807 organ and the 1746 canopy over the pulpit. Another important element of this church is the portcullis placed above the northern portal which has remained intact since 1525.

At the entry into the churchyard there is a small museum of Saxon culture where you may admire traditional Saxon costumes, photos and other items donated by the members of the Valea Viilor community. The church is listed on the UNESCO protected monuments list.
