In the 15th century a few nuns of the Poor Clare order arrived in the burgh of Sibiu where they built a small monastery and a gothic church. A century later upon the imposition of the Lutheran reform in Sibiu, the nuns were banished, the monastery closed and the church was turned into a cereals storehouse and left to decay.

In the early 18th century the Jesuit and Franciscan monks arrived in Sibiu. Because there wasn’t too much room for them to build a church inside the citadel, the monks received the building of the former monastery of the Poor Clare nuns which they restored in a late baroque style.

In the communist times the monks were deported to concentration camps and the church closed. Nowadays it is managed by The Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Sibiu; occasionally there are religious sermons and the church may only be visited on request.

Did you know...?

At the basement of the Franciscan church there are old crypts. Inside, the church hosts the tombstones of some of Sibiu’s great personalities from the 17th - 18th century.

The Poor Clare Order was set up in the 13th century when it was also called the Poor Sisters’ Order. Its name comes from St. Clare of Assisi who, just like St. Francis of Assisi, wanted to dedicate herself to the teachings of Jesus Christ and lead a simple, modest life.
