The historic monument church was built between 1807 and 1808 from rocks and bricks. It is famous due to its fresco which was entirely painted by the Grecu family of painters from Săsăuş.

Through their paintings, the Grecu brothers tried to rebel against the social injustice of their times. In the frescoes of the church from Fofeldea they put moralistic scenes which criticized the invaders. Inside, the church shows a series of biblical scenes adapted to the times in which the painters lived. Jesus’s persecutors are represented by Turkish soldiers and the negative characters are dressed in Habsburg soldiers’ clothes.

The dominant colour is yellow, the famous golden yellow of the Grecu brothers’ works.

Did you know...?

The Grecus were a family of painters from Săsăuş who went on for three generations and painted several churches in southern Transylvania, all of them now declared historic monuments. They lived in the late 18th - early 19th century and through their style directly linked to the post-Brâncoveanu tradition they influenced the evolution of the artistic centres south of the Carpathians.
